Fantastic Contraption is a physics puzzle game you can play on the web. Each level has the same goal with different obstacles. You have a limited build area but in that area you can have as many machine parts ads you want provided they all fit. You build different “contraptions” to reach your goal.
I was watching something on G4TV and one of their little break segment featured this game. I love it! I played thru all the levels over the weekend and now I’m jones’n for more. I would love to see a second version of the game with more parts to use.
Spoiler Alert!
Here are a couple of my completed machines that I’m pretty proud of, but you might want to wait until you try the level yourself before you look at them.
U-Turn – I think this is my best one! Once I got the concept together it worked better than I had imagined.
Unpossible – It was Bob who had the final piece to bring this one together. I think this was the hardest of them. I had several different designs that did not work but each one gave me a component of the final contraption.

Its really too bad to since the G-Man doesn’t do trivia on home game weekends there will be no trivia on those Fridays at all now.
I’ll have to find a new show so stay tuned to this page or the Team Trivia PA blog for future announcements.

Today is ‘Talk like a Pirate Day’ so try to greet everyone with a hearty “Ahoy matey!” International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD) was invented in 1995 by John “Ol’ Chumbucket” Baur and Mark “Cap’n Slappy” Summers, who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate.
Personally I think this is a great excuse to call off work strap on your eye patch and parrot and drink rum all day. Not everyone can do that so throwing out an “Arrr!” every once in a while will do. Arrrg yes, it’s a pirate’s life for me cuz like me ol’dad has always said, the best thing about being a pirate is you can get drunk and pee in the ocean!

I’ve been reading some of the new paladin spells for Wrath of the Lich King and I found a change that some of you may be very alarmed about.
When the new spell/talent go into effect there is be no more ‘Blessing of Salvation’ (the threat reduction buff)!
They have taken the blessing spells and divided them into two groups. Many of them will stay blessings and work exactly as they do now Might, Wisdom, Kings, Sanctuary but the rest of them will become hand spells, Protection, Freedom, Salvation, Sacrifice. This is a major change in that a target can have a blessing spell and a hand spell on him at the same time. This is a great improvement.
The problem with blessing like Freedom, Sacrifice that to use them you have to remove the blessing that is already on the target so in a lot of cases it would do more harm than good. Now I know you could argue that it just take a little coordination on the part of the pally to put the first blessing back up but between the time and the extra mana it’s just not gonna happen.
The only real drawback to these changes is that we are loosing Blessing of Salvation and I think this is going to be a huge handicap for a while. The blessing reduced all threat generated by 30% while it was on and you could put it on everyone. The individual blessing lasted 10 minutes and the greater lasted 30 minutes. The Hand Spell reduces the targets total treat by 2% per second for 10 seconds and each pally can only hit one part or raid member once every 2 minutes.
I’m thinking about just stopping the use of the blessing now so people get used to it. That way I would still have it if there was someone in the raid that just had no ability at all to control their agro. If we wait until they make the change then it will be gone and it will be do or die with the agro.
BTW – the new spells and talents will be introduced before the expansion is released.

48 days ago: Black Velvet

OK, now my feelings are hurt!
My favorite (alcoholic) drink by far is a layered beer & cider drink which was called a “Black Velvet” when I was introduced to it. And the name perfectly describes the experience of drinking one. The only problem with drinking these is that they are so yummy that you can get hammered in no time at all!
I used to drink these all the time when I was living in Atlanta but I have not found a place here that has both Guinness and hard cider on tap. You can make them from bottled beer but then you HAVE to order 2 at a time. So I wanted to put up a post with the recipe and as always I started with a web search to check my facts.
Well I come to find out that a ‘Black Velvet’ traditionally is made from beer and champagne) and the version I have come to love is referred to as a ‘poor mans’ Black Velvet. Bastards!
I was doing a little more research and I find it on the Woodchuck Draft Cider has a Black Velvet but also referred to as a Black Apple. I kinda like that!
Ok so here is how you make these. I’ll explain the home version so you can make them yourself plus if you understand it this way it will be very easy to order at the pub.
What you need:
- 6 pack of dark beer, I prefer Guinness
- 6 pack of hard cider, Woodchuck is a good choice
- 2 pint glasses (chilled)
- 1 large soup or serving spoon
- 1 buddy to drink the second drink (optional)
How to do it:
- Setup your 2 pint glasses on the bar and divided one bottle of hard cider evenly between them.
- Pour one bottle of dark beer over the back of the spoon into the pint glasses on top of the cider divided evenly between the 2. The idea is to layer the 2 drinks not mix them.
- Drink and make yummy noises!
- Repeat 5 times. Warning this step is for experts and should not be attempted by amateurs.

109 days ago: 6 days a week
You can now catch me 6 days a week hosting Team Trivia games!
- SUNDAY (8:00 pm) at Quaker Steak & Lube
- MONDAY (10:00 pm) at the Lion’s Den
- TUESDAY (8:00 pm) at Champs Sports Grill
- WEDNESDAY (7:00 pm) at the Dark Horse
- THURSDAY (7:00 pm) at the Rathskeller
- FRIDAY (10:00 pm) at Quaker Steak & Lube
- This our Sex, Sports, & Rock’n Roll show
Note that the shows are at different time each evening. Two are a little early 7pm, two are at the traditional time 8pm, and two are “late night” 10pm. If you can’t make it to one of these shows then you just don’t like trivia.
On July 10th I’ll open our first Bloomsburg PA show at Harry’s Grille. I’ll host this Thursday night at 8:00pm show myself for the first few weeks, just until we can hire and train a host for that area. I’m hoping to have 3-4 shows in that area by this fall so it would make a great part-time job for someone who lived up there. Let me know if you know anyone.
I’m also looking for a venue to host non-smoking Team Trivia. All of our current State College locations are great places to play Team Trivia and the only negative I ever hear is there are a few folks that would like a non-smoking venue. It will be a little tough to fit another show into our schedule but I think the right location would do very well advertised as ‘no smoking’. If you think of a good place let me know.

124 days ago: The Scotsman
This old drinking song has always cracked me up. I have an mp3 of the tune if I can figure out how I’ll link it here.
words and music by Mike Cross
Well a Scotsman clad in kilt left a bar on evening fair
And one could tell by how we walked that he drunk more than his share
He fumbled round until he could no longer keep his feet
Then he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street
Ring ding diddle diddle I de oh ring di diddly I oh
He stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street
About that time two young and lovely girls just happend by
And one says to the other with a twinkle in her eye
See yon sleeping Scotsman so strong and handsome built
I wonder if it’s true what they don’t wear beneath the kilt
Ring ding diddle diddle I de oh ring di diddly I oh
I wonder if it’s true what they don’t wear beneath the kilt
They crept up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be
Lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see
And there behold, for them to see, beneath his Scottish skirt
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth
Ring ding diddle diddle I de oh ring di diddly I oh
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth
They marveled for a moment, then one said we must be gone
Let’s leave a present for our friend, before we move along
As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon, tied into a bow
Around the bonnie star, the Scots kilt did lift and show
Ring ding diddle diddle I de oh ring di diddly I oh
Around the bonnie star, the Scots kilt did lift and show
Now the Scotsman woke to nature’s call and stumbled towards a tree
Behind a bush, he lift his kilt and gawks at what he sees
And in a startled voice he says to what’s before his eyes.
O lad I don’t know where you been but I see you won first prize
Ring ding diddle diddle I de oh ring di diddly I oh
O lad I don’t know where you been but I see you won first prize

137 days ago: Stanley Cup backs Penguins
The NHL Stanley Cup final get underway this Saturday when my Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Detroit Redwings in Detroit. The Pens have had an incredible successful post season sweeping Calgary in the first round, then downing the NY Rangers and their captain, Jaromir Jagr, in just 5 games, and absolutely humiliating Philadelphia with a 6 goal shut out to win that series in game five.
I have a really good feeling about the rest of the playoffs, even the Stanley Cup wants the Pens to win.
Trivia Fans…
The cups finals will be on a Saturday-Monday-Wednesday schedule so there should not be any conflicts with Team Trivia (at least not my shows). Even Wednesdays at the Dark Horse should be OK, trivia starts at 7pm and game coverage doesn’t even start til 8 so I’m not sure when the puck will actually drop.
The photo is of Stanley Joseph Cup, age 59 of Saltsburg, PA a diehard Penguins fan. Bob sent me the article about him. Read more here.
